What the Career Office is, what it is not, and what we each agree to when you use it. Written to be read, not skimmed past.

About these terms

The Career Office is a careers service for students and for anyone looking for work. These terms apply whenever you use this website, whether you are signed in or not.

By using the Career Office you agree to these terms. How we handle your personal information is set out separately in the privacy policy.

Who you are agreeing with

The Career Office belongs to Skills Academy Supported Learning (Pty) Ltd, trading as Skills Academy, company registration number 2018/396931/07. It is also used by Skills Academy's sister colleges, Matric College and Bellview Institute of Distance Learning. When these terms say "we" or "the Career Office", they mean Skills Academy Supported Learning (Pty) Ltd.

What the Career Office does

  • Helps you build a CV from scratch, or improve the one you have.
  • Writes a CV and cover letter for a specific job advert.
  • Helps you prepare for an interview, and make the case for a promotion.
  • Lets you send a question to a Career Office advisor.
  • Offers free tools to anyone: a career aptitude test, CV and cover-letter templates, and phone scripts.
  • Offers Career Office Premium: all of the help above, plus the 20-module programme, a job-hunting glossary and a way to compare job offers.

What it does not do

  • It does not place you in a job. We help you apply properly. Whether you are invited to an interview or offered a job is up to the employer.
  • It does not guarantee results. A better CV improves your chances; it does not promise an outcome.
  • It does not sign you up to a subscription. Career Office Premium is one payment that covers 12 months. Nothing renews by itself and you are never charged again unless you choose to buy another 12 months. It is free for enrolled students.

Who can use what

  • Free tools — the aptitude test, templates and phone scripts — are open to anyone, with no sign-in.
  • Career Office Premium — CVs, cover letters, interview preparation, a promotion case, advisor questions, the 20-module programme, the glossary and offer comparison — is R1,250 for 12 months.
  • Enrolled students get Premium free for as long as they remain enrolled. You sign in with your email address.
  • You must be 18 or older to create an account or buy Premium. The free tools need no account.

Keep your sign-in details to yourself. If you think someone else has used your account, tell the Career Office straight away.

How your documents are made

Your documents are built only from what you tell us and what you send us. If something important is missing, we ask you for it rather than fill the gap ourselves.

Parts of the drafting are done with the help of an AI service. Every draft is checked against the information you gave before it is released, and anything that cannot be traced back to you is taken out.

The documents we make for you are yours to use however you like.

Your part

  • Tell us the truth. Your CV will say what you tell us. Do not give us qualifications, jobs or dates that are not real.
  • Read your documents before you send them. You are the one sending them to an employer, so check that everything is correct.
  • Ask before sharing other people's details. Only give us a referee's name and contact details if they have agreed. Our CVs say references are available on request, so you do not have to.

The free tools

The free tools give general guidance, not personal advice. The aptitude test suggests directions worth looking into — it does not decide what you should do.

Asking an advisor

When you send a question you get a reference number, and you can expect a reply within 24 hours. If you have not heard back after 24 hours, follow up and quote your reference.

Advisors give guidance based on what you tell them. The decisions you make about your career are your own.

Career Office Premium

Enrolled students at Skills Academy, Matric College and Bellview Institute of Distance Learning get Premium at no charge, for as long as they stay enrolled.

Anyone else can buy 12 months of Premium for R1,250, and the price is shown before you pay. It is one payment and not a subscription: nothing renews by itself and no card is kept. Your access ends 12 months after you buy it, and you can buy another 12 months then if you want to.

Paying, and the 30-day money-back guarantee

  • The price. Premium is R1,250 for 12 months. That is the full amount: there is nothing more to pay, and it is shown before you pay.
  • It starts straight away. Premium opens as soon as your payment goes through, and the 12 months run from that day.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee. If you change your mind, you can ask for all your money back within 30 days of paying. Email support@skillsacademy.edu.za or use the contact form. You do not have to give a reason.
  • How the refund is paid. We refund the full amount to the payment method you used, within 7 working days of your request. Your Premium access ends when the refund is made.
  • Your record. We keep a record of your payment, of any refund, and of when you confirmed that Premium should start straight away, for 7 years. Ask us for a copy at any time.
  • How you pay. You pay on the payment provider's secure page. The Career Office never sees or keeps your card details.

This does not affect your rights under the Consumer Protection Act. If Premium does not work as we describe it, tell us at support@skillsacademy.edu.za and we will put it right.

Using the service fairly

Do not try to get into anyone else's account, interfere with how the site works, or use it to collect information about other people. We may suspend access for anyone who does.

What we are responsible for

We take care to make the Career Office work properly and to keep your information safe. We are not responsible for what an employer decides, for a document you send without checking it, or for the website being unavailable for a while for reasons outside our control.

Where the law allows us to limit what we are responsible for, our responsibility for any one claim is limited to what you paid us for Premium in the 12 months before it. Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility where the law does not allow it, including under the Consumer Protection Act.

Changes

We may change what the Career Office offers, and we may update these terms. When we do, the date at the top of this page changes. If a change affects you significantly, we will tell you when you next sign in.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. Nothing in them takes away rights you have under South African law, including the Consumer Protection Act and the Protection of Personal Information Act.
